1 The Torre de Belém (Belém Tower) or the Tower of St Vincent is a fortified tower located on the outskirts of Lisbon and was built in the early 16th century.
2 The UNESCO World Heritage Site tower is about 12 metres (39 feet) wide and 30 metres (98 feet) tall and sits on a basaltic outcropping of rocks, rather than the Tagus riverbank as most people surmise.
3 The first-floor interior contains the Sala do Governador (Governor's Hall), the second floor houses the Sala dos Reis (King's Hall), the third floor contains the Sala das Audiências (Audience Hall), while the fourth floor chapel has a vaulted rib ceiling supported by carved corbels.
